As we celebrate the spirit of Independence Day, I’m reminded of a recent conversation with my university-going niece. She expressed frustration over not being able to make impromptu plans with her friends, stay out late, or travel alone, while her male cousins and friends have no such restrictions. This disparity raises a deeper question: is freedom of choice – like travelling and hanging out with friends – a luxury, or a fundamental aspect of personal growth and exploration?
Freedom to choose, the essence of independence
The struggle for freedom of choice becomes evident in different ways. Every woman has a unique voice and perspective, yet many still face the challenge of battling stereotypes when they speak up. Take Shalini Mehta, a solo traveler from Delhi who has explored over 30 countries, defying the stereotype that women need company to travel safely. Or consider Dr. Anjali Rao, a renowned scientist, who encountered skepticism early in her career simply because she was a woman in a male-dominated field. Today, she leads groundbreaking research in renewable energy, proving that determination and intellect know no gender. These stories have inspired many women to step out of their comfort zones and embrace the world fearlessly. Their experiences often resonate with my own. Navigating the boardroom as one of the few women involves whispers of tokenism and overcoming misconceptions, proving that assertiveness should not be mistaken for aggression.
Similarly, fashion serves as another arena where freedom of choice plays a crucial role as a powerful tool of self-expression. Whether it’s traditional sarees or modern jeans, women should have the freedom to wear what they choose without fear of judgment. Neha Parikh, an entrepreneur from Mumbai, proudly wears her hijab while leading her tech startup. Her choice of attire is a reflection not only of her faith and identity, but also signifies that professional success and personal beliefs can harmoniously coexist. Independence empowers individual expression, and fuels personal and professional growth. I hope that more women can seize opportunities without fear, embracing the freedom to express themselves and pursue their dreams.
As we honour our nation’s independence, let’s celebrate the strides we have made towards ensuring freedom of choice for every woman. Our commitment to supporting and uplifting one another can foster an environment where women can thrive without constraints, and move towards an equitable world.
Here’s to a future where every woman can freely express herself, pursue her dreams, and live life on her own terms.
Happy Independence Day!
